Description

My definition of a Shopping Centre Manager is:
A Jack of all Trades but a MASTER at finding the right person (or specialist) for the job at hand.
This guide is written of the back of my definition above, as it is an impossible task for a Centre (or Mall) Manager to be a specialist in every function or discipline it takes to run a Shopping Mall. Yet, if you have access to the entire spectrum of specialists there is, then your job is as good as covered.
As the student of this guide, you have come from some background that led you to the job of a Centre Manager. That may be financial, commercial, retailing, in fact any of a wide range of backgrounds that make you suitable for this position, but any background will not make you the “all-rounder” you need to be for the job at hand.
All you really have  to master is to utilize specialists correctly in order to run your Shopping Centre effectively.
Whether you are brand new at this or somewhat experienced in managing Malls, you will find that I am making this as simple as possible in this guide going forward, but leave it filled with “gems of knowledge” that I have gained over many years.
What are these “specialist” aspects then? In a broad sense it covers the following:

  • Leasing
  • Operations (Facility Management)
  • Marketing
  • Financial and Administrative Performance
  • Legal compliance
  • Management structure
  • You

The rest of this guide will touch upon the detail of all the above in a way that gives you a fair understanding of how it works as stand-alone functions and how you can use it as a collective to manage an efficient Shopping Centre.
